♥ a vision is not just a picture of what could be; it is an appeal to our better selves, a call to become something more.

this evening, thanks to my new favorite blog, life + times,
i discovered the work of an amazing, little known african director:

the brief yet beautiful film, black girl (1966) is about a hopeful,
young senegalese woman who moves to france to work for a well-to-do
white family only to find that she is treated as a mere servant
and would have been better off if she had never left.

with his inimitable ability to master the art of film-making
ousmane sembane became the foremost "father of african cinema."
and now, an artistically styled documentary film has been
made to celebrate this very artistic director. it looks so good!
